To Know Him Is To Love Him
by Christi Huff
Scripture Reading: Exodus 5-6

In Exodus 5:2, when Moses and Aaron approached Pharaoh about letting the children of Israel go out of Egypt to worship God, he answered them with the following question: “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.”

Oftentimes, it is easy to go against someone you neither know, nor respect. This was certainly the case with Pharaoh. Much of the world’s problems stem from a failure to understand just who God is. If we are being really honest, we can also say that most of the problems within the church, or even more specifically, within the individual believer’s life also stem from a lack of depth in understanding the true character of God.

While it is true that, to our human minds, God is incomprehensible and infinite, He is most definitely knowable. His ways may be beyond our understanding, but as His children we are able to not only learn of His character, but also have fellowship with Him through the gift of His Son.

Yet, God has very specific requirements for revealing Himself to us. “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant" (Psalm 25:14). "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him” (John 14:21). Those are just two examples of what God expects from us in order to know Him.

Knowing the God of the Bible takes work and comes with a price. Far too often, we had rather fashion a god of our own choosing; one who has few requirements, and tends to line up with our way of thinking rather than the other way around. It is impossible to grow as Christians unless we resist this temptation. Consider asking God to deepen your desire to know every facet of His character, because there is always more to know! It has been said, “We can have as much of God as we want; in fact, we already do."
