Your Way or God’s Way?
by Jody Huff
Scripture Reading: Genesis 4-5

In this age old story of Cain and Abel, we see two different approaches to worshipping God. In Cain’s offering, we see Cain choosing to worship God the way he wanted to worship God. Abel, on the other hand, chose to worship God the way God wanted him to worship. As you have read today, Abel’s offering was pleasing to God and Cain’s was not. Even though God gave Cain a second chance to make it right, Cain refused and fell short of the mark.

Whom do you emulate in your worship and service to God, Cain or Abel? Do you serve God only when it is convenient, or only when you get to choose the task? Do you strive to faithfully assemble with other believers, or do you find excuses to be unfaithful? When you sing in church, do you really engage your mind and heart, or is it just lip service?

1 Cor 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Abel chose to serve and worship God the way God wanted, not the way he wanted. Just like the widow that put her two mites in the offering (Luke 21:1-4), Abel not only gave the right offering, he gave it with the right heart condition. How is your heart condition right now? Is your selfishness standing in the way of how you serve and worship God, or do you worship God the way He wants you to worship Him?

If you worship Him the way He wants to be worshipped, praise God! If sin and self are in the way, then confess it to God, knowing He is ready and willing to forgive you and give you a fresh start.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
